Principal Solution Architect - eCommerce

Ready to join one of the most successful fashion brands on the high street? Do you have a passion for fashion? Driven to achieve? United to win? If your answers are yes, we think you’ll love it here on the Island…
From our first shop in the remains of a North London bombsite in the 1940s, to now over 250 stores across the UK, Ireland and internationally. We are known for our stylish, affordable fashion and we like to shout-it loud.
Our Island community is everything and we are stronger together. Every Islander counts in making fashion a force for good and we value individuality and difference. Exceptional people have made River Island a success for over 70 years. Together we will continue to do so in the years ahead.
We are one team. We are the difference. We are River Island.

The role:

River Island is looking to grow an IT architecture team divorced from the typical stereotypes all too often seen in large enterprises. Onerous governance processes and approval boards will not be found here.

Instead, this is a team that prioritises automation over documentation, values transparency and brevity over bureaucracy and takes and active responsibility in actually delivering working solutions to production.

River Island aims to put ultra-modern IT architecture at the heart of what we do. We are not trying to simply match our competitors in this space and as such, the architecture team is constantly on the lookout for new tools and techniques for tackling new and existing business challenges.

We are looking for motivated members who bring experience, new ideas and most importantly positive energy to designing and delivering systems for a fast-paced retailer working in a dynamic industry. No two days present the same challenges and so a successful candidate will be ready to apply themselves to new domains and technologies at any time.

At River Island, we believe that each member of our architecture team should be able to lead a solution design and drive its implementation, but also be able to contribute to the wider enterprise strategy that we build and evolve as a community. Who better to ensure that the enterprise vision is delivered than the architects on the ground delivering solutions?

Core responsibilities:

  • To work with the wider architecture community at River Island and contribute to exploring and defining architectural principles and strategic direction.
  • Supply hands-on architecture expertise to project teams, applying those principles to shaping conceptual, logical and physical IT solutions for projects.
  • To consult with business users to help them articulate their requirements in a technology agnostic manner and to distil each requirement down to its root. E.g. The production of a transaction report is not a root business requirement, the ability to reconcile transactions and take action on outliers is the root requirement.
  • To work with the IT Security & Compliance to ensure security, resilience and scalability are appropriately factored in the solutions architecture.
  • To ensure that appropriate levels of concise documentation are created and maintained for such solution designs.
  • To present those solution designs to the wider architecture community for review, iteration and ultimately approval by the community.
  • Work with software vendors to understand and/or influence the direction of their products so as to better inform River Island’s architectural approach.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for domain specific new technologies.
  • Understand business requirements for any given project such that it is possible to identify where changes in business process or requirements scope may be a lower cost alternative to a technical solution.
  • To recognise opportunities to deploy technology to business processes as they present themselves and initiate the investigation and development of innovative methods of exploiting IT assets to the benefit of River Island’s customers and internal users.

Required experience:

  • Demonstrable depth of knowledge and hands on practical experience in one or more architectural domains. E.g:
    • Infrastructure (solid cloud and devops experience mandatory in this field)
    • Retail operations (POS systems included)
    • Supply chain
    • Buying & merchandising
    • Omni-channel commerce
    • Business Intelligence
    • Data science
  • Demonstrable capacity to apply oneself to architectural challenges outside of ones’ typical area of specialism when required – for example to appraise solution designs presented to the architectural community by one of its members.
  • Sound understanding of cloud services as to be able to assess their suitability for applying to solution designs.
  • Demonstrable understanding of data modelling backed by experience of relational and/or noSQL databases.
  • Experience working in an agile environment

Desirable experience:

  • AWS architecture certifications
  • Experience working with CI/CD automation tooling, especially Terraform
  • Familiarity with microservices architecture
  • Experience of bricks & mortar retail business.
  • Experience in the fashion industry.
  • Familiarity with Unix administration.
  • Experience with modern programming language(s)
