1948 - OUR STORY BEGINS

Bernard Lewis starts selling knitting wool from a shop in an east London bombsite

1955 - THE BOOM YEARS

Lewis Separates, as it has become known, increases from five stores to nine

1965 - GROOVY GROWTH

The 70 store empire of Lewis Separates is transformed into Chelsea Girl

1982 - A MAN'S WORLD 

The first Menswear store is launched under the name Concept Man

1991 - A BRAND IS BORN

New era, new brand: Chelsea Girl and Concept Man becomes River Island 

1993 - INTERNATIONAL APPEAL

The first River Island store is launched in the Republic of Ireland 

2005 - NURTURING FRESH TALENT

River Island sponsors Graduate Fashion Week for the first in six consecutive years 

2006 - GOING GLOBAL

The first River Island store outside of the UK and ROI opens in Amsterdam

2008 - ON TREND & ONLINE
